SOUTH AUSTRALIA

HOMICIDE AND RELATED OFFENCES

The number of victims of Homicide and related offences recorded in South Australia increased slightly from 35 victims in 2015 to 37 victims in 2016. Almost two thirds (65%) of victims were males (24 victims). Victims aged between 25 and 34 years accounted for the largest proportion of victims (35% or 13 victims), followed by victims aged 55 years and over (32% or 12 victims). (Tables 6 & 7)

The majority of Homicide victims knew their offender (81% or 30 victims) and six out of ten Homicides (62%) occurred at a residential location. A weapon was used in the majority of incidents (89% or 33 victims). (Tables 8, 9 & 11)

ASSAULT

From 2015 to 2016, the number of victims of Assault decreased by 2% from 17,270 victims to 16,978 victims, which was the first decrease since 2012. The victimisation rate decreased from 1,017 to 994 victims per 100,000 persons. (Table 6)

Females accounted for 53% of victims of Assault in South Australia (8,927 victims), and a higher proportion of female victims knew their offender (84% compared to 53% for males). Males were more likely to be assaulted by a stranger (44% compared to 14% of females). (Tables 12 & 13)

In 2016 the majority of Assaults did not involve the use of a weapon (78% or 13,167 victims), and occurred in a residential location (57%). (Tables 8 & 9)

SEXUAL ASSAULT

Between 2015 and 2016, the number of victims of Sexual assault decreased by 4% from 1,590 victims to 1,521 victims. Four out of five victims (85%) of Sexual assault were female (1,296 victims). A quarter of those female victims were aged between 15 and 19 years (326 victims). (Tables 6 & 7)

In 2016 the majority of Sexual assault victims knew their offender (82% or 1,253 victims). For victims who knew their offender, 40% were victimised by a family member (or 489 victims), while the majority (60% or 762 victims) were victimised by a non-family member (non-family member includes a variety of relationships such as ex-partners, foster parents, teachers, acquaintances, colleagues, friends, etc.). (Table 11)

PROPERTY CRIME

Between 2015 and 2016, the largest numerical increase for victims of property crime occurred for victims of Other theft which rose by 7% (or 2,645 victims). Almost half (48%) of Other theft victimisation occurred at a retail location (18,912 victims).

The number of victims of Unlawful entry with intent in South Australia increased by 8%, from 13,217 victims in 2015 to 14,222 victims in 2016. The majority of victims (77%) reported the offence occurred at a residential location (10,890 victims). Two-thirds of victims of Unlawful entry with intent had property stolen during the offence (67% or 9,581 victims). (Tables 6 & 8)

From 2015 to 2016 the number of victims of Motor vehicle theft increased by 10% from 3,217 victims to 3,549 victims, which was the first increase since the beginning of the time series in 2010. (Table 6)

Half (50%) of the Motor vehicle thefts occurred at a residential location (1,780 victims), and 32% from a street/footpath (1,119 victims). (Table 8)
